Questions, answered
Short answers to what small business owners ask me most. If yours isn't here, ask me on the free call.
How much does bookkeeping cost?
Monthly bookkeeping starts at $350 a month, as one flat fee. Where you land depends on how many transactions you have, how many accounts you run, and what shape your books are in today. You'll know the exact number before your first invoice.
Add-ons like invoicing, bill pay, job costing, inventory and 1099s each get their own fixed monthly price. If you ask for something outside what we agreed on, I'll explain what it involves and get your OK in writing first.
What's included each month?
Every month you get:
- Your bank, credit card and merchant accounts reconciled, so QuickBooks matches your statements
- Every transaction sorted into the right category
- A Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and Statement of Cash Flows
- A look at anything unusual, and a question to you about anything I can't identify
- A short, plain-English note on what the numbers say
- Email and text support for your bookkeeping questions
- A check-in call of up to 30 minutes
At year end, I pull together a package for your tax preparer and work with them directly.
Do you do taxes or payroll?
No to both. I don't prepare tax returns or give tax advice, so you'll need a CPA or enrolled agent. I'm glad to work directly with yours. I don't run payroll either. Keep your payroll provider, and I'll record what it produces in your books.
My books are behind, or a mess. Can you help?
Yes. Catch-up is for books that are behind. Cleanup is for books that are wrong. I don't quote either one over the phone. I look at your actual file first, then give you a fixed price. One-time work is paid for before I start. More on setup, catch-up and cleanup.
Is my financial information safe?
I handle it carefully. Your accounts stay entirely yours: I never hold signature authority or move money for you. What you share with me stays confidential. I use unique passwords, multi-factor authentication wherever it's offered, and encrypted storage.
Which software do you use?
Mostly QuickBooks Online. I also work in QuickBooks Desktop and Xero. No software yet? I can set up QuickBooks Online for you.
Who do you work with?
Small businesses, from one-person shops to small teams. That includes retail and handmade-goods businesses, contractors and trades that need job costing, and service businesses. If your kind of business isn't on that list, ask me on the free call. I'll tell you honestly if I'm the right fit.
Where do you work with clients?
I work remotely with clients across the U.S., and in person around Gray, Windham and Portland, Maine. Most of the work happens in your accounting software, by email and text, and on a monthly call, so distance doesn't change much.
Is there a long-term contract?
No. It's month to month, and either of us can end it with 30 days' notice. Everything we agree on goes in one short proposal and agreement that we both sign.
How does billing work?
I invoice on the 1st of each month. Payment is due within 10 days, by ACH bank transfer or card.
